good news

The Gospel literally translates to Good News. Here at City Church, our desire is that everyone who comes through our doors has access to what we believe is the best news of all time - the Gospel. Jesus made a way for us to walk with Him through this life and one day enter into eternity with Him forever. Here is the best story ever told. First off,

The God who created everything also created you, knows you, and loves you more than you can imagine. He loves you so much that He became human to live and die for you and the rest of the world. Now, He invites you to love Him in return and join Him in His work to restore the world.

The Gospel tells us that we have all sinned, choosing our own desires over God's perfect will. This brings chaos, destruction, and death to the world. But God, in His great love and mercy, sent His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life. During His time on earth he cared for the poor, healed the sick, and taught us what it is like to live in the Kingdom of God. This didn't sit well with many people, and religious leaders of the time decided to kill Jesus. However, this was part of God's perfect plan. Because Jesus lived a perfect life and died, the wrath of God was satisfied. Jesus took the punishment for sin away from us, and because He is the perfect sacrifice, his work stands forever. Victorious, Jesus rose from the dead and has ascended to heaven. Now, God is working to restore creation to its proper order. All who place their faith in Jesus receive mercy, eternal life, joy, and peace.

If you want to make the decision to follow Jesus, Scripture makes it clear what is required of us. Repent of your sins, believe in the Lord Jesus (that He died and rose from the dead), and confess openly to following him. These Scriptures are listed below. Talk with a trusted friend, or reach out to one of our staff members if you have questions!

Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 10:9–10 "If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved."

Romans 10:13 "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

When it comes to following Jesus, knowing where to start can be difficult! We recommend reading the Bible with a friend or a group of people. Our City Groups, Sisterhood Groups, or Brotherhood Triads are where we practice this, and we would love for you to join us! If you would like to start reading the Bible, we recommend starting in the book of John or the book of Romans. We have linked these books below! As always, if you would like to talk to someone about all of this, feel free to reach out to us!

Want to take more steps towards following Jesus? Water baptism is the outward expression of the inward decision to follow Christ. Learn more about baptism here.
